I was very fortunate to have had dedicated and inspiring teachers myself in Dublin, Cork and London. My philosophy as a teacher of the Harp and of Singing is to teach firstly the fundamentals of good Harp playing and good Singing ie. a solid foundation / technique and from there we can explore the joy of music making which is an emotional experience which affects both the music maker and the listener.
I teach the Harp and Singing [ separately] to many young students on a weekly basis in Kerry and at St. Angela’s Academy of Music, Ursuline, Thurles. I teach the RIAM syllabus in both instruments, up to and including Gr. 8 and have had several students obtain High Achiever Awards from the RIAM based on their results in both Harp and Singing. I also teach the ABRSM syllabus in Singing. I prepare students for Leaving Cert Practical exams in both instruments as well as preparing them for Competitions and Concerts. A number of my students are currently studying Music at 3rd level in top Irish Music Colleges eg. Cork School of Music. DIT College of Music, Dublin and Maynooth University.
I was the co-founder of the first Muckross Harp Trail in Oct. 2012, in conjunction with Muckross House and Traditional Farms, Killarney, the Dept of Arts, Culture and Heritage and Aileen Mc Crann, Dublin. This was a gathering of 30 Harp players from Kerry and beyond for a day of workshops with visiting Harp teachers and a unique ‘ Harp Trail’ where visitors to Muckross enjoyed listening to the sound of the Harp, our national instrument, on their tour of Muckross and the Traditional Farms. We are already planning the next Harp Trail !
Alongside this, I am very committed to my own ongoing Professional Development / Learning as a Teacher and Performer in order to maintain ‘creativity’ in my work. I am currently preparing to take my LABRSM in Singing Performance and in 2012 I successfully completed the ABRSM ‘ Being an Effective Teacher’ online course and I had a very inspiring and enjoyable weekend at the ABRSM Teacher’s Conference in London in Nov. last.
